1. Protect your skin from the sun

One of the best ways to protect your skin from the summer sun is to use sunscreen and protective clothing.  Use lip balm and sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 and reapply every two hours if you are spending time outdoors.  It’s best to seek shade during peak hours of the day.

UV/SPF sun protective clothing is very effective and may now be found in many clothing items – from sportswear shirts, pants, and shorts to bathing suits.  Sunglasses and hats are also an important part of protective clothing.

2. Hydrate

When it’s hot outside, your body temperature rises and cools itself by sweating which reduces your body’s water level.  To prevent dehydration and dry skin, increase your water intake when spending time outdoors this summer.  This will keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliate your skin every 6 weeks to remove dead skin cells and impurities that can clog pores and cause breakouts.  Do not exfoliate if you have had a recent sun burn, infection, or other skin irritation.  Consult your dermatologist to see if exfoliation is right for you.

4. Moisturize

In the summer, you might prefer a lightweight daily moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated without making it feel heavy.  At bedtime, a heavier moisturizer that contains shea butter or jojoba to attract and retain moisture could be beneficial after sun exposure.  If too much sun exposure, try a recovering gel with aloe to cool and soothe sun burned skin.

5. Cleanse

Use a gentle cleanser daily to remove dirt, oil, and sweat from your skin. Avoid using harsh soaps, which can strip your skin of its natural oils.
