Setting Wellness Goals in the New Year

To help you succeed with self-care this year, try these simple steps to create a wellness plan that will be easy to follow and benefit your whole health – mind, body, and spirit.
1. Make a List of Activities You Enjoy Doing
Finding joy in what you do is the key to achieving your goals. First, make a list of all the activities you like doing – from exercise to time with friends – whatever recharges your batteries and makes you feel good.
Some examples include: a walk in nature, time playing with your favorite pet, a warm cup of tea, a good book, swimming, traveling, shopping with friends, or receiving a massage.
Your list can be short or long – just make sure it’s activities you want to do. Next, choose 2 activities per week and add them to your calendar.
In addition, post this list somewhere you’ll see it every day – on your bathroom mirror, the fridge, or as an alert on your phone. That way when you find yourself with unexpected free time, you can go to the list and choose another favorite.
If you work in healthcare, hospice, or are a caregiver, making time just for you is especially important. Paying attention to your needs can help prevent burnout and decrease stress.
2. Try Something New
Want to learn how to play the piano, hike the Appalachian Trail, or learn to meditate? Trying a new activity can be an energizing and exciting way to start the new year. Find something new to explore and set a goal.
When taking on a new activity, it’s important to start slowly and work your way up from there. If your goal is to run your first 5k, begin with a 30-minute walk 3 times a week. Then increase the pace, duration and frequency and work up to the race. If your goal is to eat healthier, try adding a serving of vegetables to one meal per day.
3. Schedule Your Goal
Start off with short, easy goals. Add them to your calendar at the beginning of each month. Use your phone or fit bit/watch to track your progress. Check off those you were able to complete and note the one’s you missed. Each month, review your progress and revise your goals as needed.
Baby steps allow you to create long lasting habits. If you are unable to meet all your goals, explore why. Did you add an activity to your busiest day of the week or at a time of day when you are too tired to do it? No worries, just adjust your upcoming goals in the next month. It’s all about being kind to yourself and just keep going. Before you know it, you’ll be making progress.
